SHOOTING THE QUEER EYE BOOK

JVN โ€ฆ doing what he does.

I was walking out of a shoot with Marie Kondo for Netflix when I saw the alert on my phone โ€” the person who had referred me for that job had just recommended me to the producers of Queer Eye to photograph a book. I was a huge fan of the original Queer Eye and the reboot was all-the-buzz. They asked โ€œare you interested?โ€ HELL YES! They were working on an impossible fast-track deadline that was unheard of in the publishing business and Iโ€™d have to shoot the book in its entirety in two weeks on location in Kansas City the following month. From our very first phone call, I knew I had found like-minded peers. When the budget discussion came up, I said โ€œI work best when I can be honest, I hate playing games. Can we skip that dance and just be respectfully straightforward with each other?โ€ There was almost a sigh of relief on the other end of the line โ€” it was actually easy to say what I was worth and what they could afford. I was so excited to be part of the book โ€” both creatively and to celebrate all that the show stands for. I knew I had my work cut out for me. I had a massive shot list to shoot the entire book in the middle of July in Kansas City while they were filming the next season. There also wasnโ€™t a budget for an assistant. And I didnโ€™t bringing any lighting gear. It was just me and the guys. But luckily when we got on location, they realized we needed more help and it was kismet that brought me together with Alex Rhoades who did a little bit of everything. The story is magic, I hope to share it with her permission at some point in the future. But in the meantime, Iโ€™m so grateful for Joel, Rob, David, JVN, Tan, Bobby, Antoni and Karamo and the work with did together to make this book.

I chatted with Today.com to talk about it and shared technical details with my fellow photographers here.
