Before Instagram Stories, there was a hot minute when Vogue.com was ramping up their online content around award shows with a feature called Getting Ready with Vogue. I was out-of-my-mind excited to be part of it. It’s one of my favorite ways to shoot — I show up alone with my camera and find the story. Sometimes I’m a complete fly on the wall, and other times I find myself working with other creatives who are having fun creating with me in-the-moment. It always started with them in their bathrobe and ended with their glam exit into a waiting car. In between it all, I had to capture the story from beginning to end, top to bottom, from a scene-setting wide shot to up-close details, from fleeting, caught moments to the obligatory posed shot at the end. Sometimes the light was terrible. Sometimes the rooms weren’t that fancy. I had to pretend to not hear certain conversations and be discreet when nakedness occurred. It was all exhilarating. It wasn’t about the celebrity and it wasn’t about Vogue (OK, it was a little bit about Vogue). It was about fashion and creativity and breaking news. Gah, I love my job!

We were at the Chateau Marmont when Olivier Rousteing of Balmain, the designer of Kate’s dress, walked in wearing THE CUTEST pants. I gasped inside myself at the same time Kate gasped aloud. They were slouchy yet cropped and sorta fitted on the calf. Moments later when Kate and I were looking at other items in the closet she whispered loudly “I want to rip those pants right off his body!” To which I replied “RIGHT?!?!” But we were there for this dress not the pants … and to this day, I still think about those damn pants. Kate would’ve rocked them. My son would, too.
